Gatekeepers are one of our commonest butterflies and rarely qualify for a second glance because of their abundance. But look more closely and you'll see that they have a subtle beauty all their own, and this was one of my favourite pictures of 2006. From a photographic perspective, the picture is completely successful. The colours work well together to provide a sense of warmth and harmony while the butterfly is caught in a highly typical, active pose. For me, it's a picture that sums up perfectly high summer in the UK.
